Being a "Strong" parent involves understanding, knowledge and an attitude to expect the best
“A 'strong' parent is having the power of resistance, not being easily dissuaded and worn down, being tough and flexible, solid and soft.
The strength of a 'strong' parent comes from a comprehensive understanding of their son or daughter's disability, knowledge of the care support services, a personal support network of friends, professionals and parents…and the audacity to expect the best.
Becoming a 'strong' parent includes the 'normal' parenting responsibilities and additional responsibilities:
- An understanding of their son or daughter's physical, emotional and spiritual needs,
- A comprehensive understanding of the family member’s disability and how it is best managed,
- A knowledge of the disability support services,
- Developing and maintaining an effective personal support network of friends, professionals and parents,
- Exercising power and influence,
- Providing protection, and
- A determination to make beneficial changes for the entire family.”
Lessons learned
Parents need to be 'strong' parents; they better cope with their circumstances through greater understanding and knowledge of the support services.
The strength of a 'strong' parent comes from understanding, knowledge and a protective caring attitude.
