Who really cares?

People with disability: Adam - a visit to the Dentist

“I started my day as any other day. Watching TV. My medication beside my mug of tea. I knew something different was going to happen but it was not until my Dad appeared at the bedroom door I remembered I was going to the dentist.

‘Ready for the Dentist?’ He asked.

I was given two tiny tablets. Dad said it would help me go to sleep before the Dentist looks at my teeth. I swallowed the tablets with a sip of tea. After a while I started to yawn and felt sleepy. We got into the car and drove. By the time we reached the dental clinic I was really tired. With Dad’s help I managed to climb the stairs. Lisa who always makes a fuss of me welcomed me as I came into the reception area. I met Dr Bedford who was going to put me asleep. He asked me how I felt and checked with Dad that I hadn't eaten anything. I then met the dentist, Dr Larcombe and his assistant Fay. They all made me feel welcome and the centre of attention.

I slumped into the dental chair. I could barely keep my eyes open to watch ‘Playschool’ on TV. I was chatting to Dr Bedford when I felt the needle being injected into arm. Before I knew it I was off to sleep with my head cradled by Dad. I felt so tired.

While I slept, my teeth were checked, cleaned and fluoride applied. No cavities were found which is remarkable since I have so much trouble letting people clean my teeth. I usually gag whenever a toothbrush is put into my mouth.

As I came out of my sleep I wanted to get off the chair and go home. I though to myself ‘I had enough of all this’. I started to get up when I heard Dad say that he was there and we will be going home as soon as I properly wake up. It was good to hear his voice. After a while, I gradually opened my eyes. I heard Dr Larcombe mention to Dad that the only problem was the ginger vitas, which had infected the top front part of my gum. He suggested that particular care be given to the brushing of my teeth and gums, and using a mouthwash.

I was walked outside back into the reception area where I eventually came to. I was so hungry and thirsty. I wanted to go home. I was helped down the stairs and back into our car. I kept nodding off as we drove home.

At home I had a cup of tea and a sandwich. I was still very tired and got into bed. As I went off to sleep I thought of what happened this morning. I felt good… everyone was thoughtful.”
