Through understanding I managed to cope

Workshops

'FamilyCare' is a series of workshop sessions providing practical guidance with lifelong care; it provides greater understanding of the challenges of lifelong care, managing a disability and living a balanced family life. View the workshop schedule.

The workshops encourage parents to objectively assess their circumstances and develop short and long-term caring strategies. Carers and Professionals are more effective if they understand the 'big picture' of lifelong care and their corresponding role.

The workshops aim to increase participant’s understanding, build knowledge and identify lifelong care strategies. Outcomes include the identification and better management of personal and family needs, development of skills and greater understanding through active learning and interaction. Participants are encouraged to develop a lifelong care plan that considers all family members.

The workshop sessions reflect a family's journey with lifelong care and addresses the challenges: Who Really Cares, Making Changes, Getting Through The Day, Supported Living, Planning For Tomorrow, Taking Care, Brothers and Sisters, Inclusion, Vulnerability, Learning to Cope and Peace of Mind.

"The workshop made me stop and think where I'm at... and resolve to make beneficial changes"

Milestones and challenges: Moving from family and personal struggles (crisis, acceptance, coping), to supported care (personal care, short and long-term care accomodation, safeguards, independence), and finally peace of mind (support, positive outcomes, understanding).

A parent’s journey with lifelong care encounters undefined milestones and hidden challenges; it is a journey without a map based on an unrealistic expectation that parents will somehow manage.

The milestones of the journey have been described as family and personal struggles, supported care and peace of mind.

To move forward decisions and changes are made; new directions are set. The milestones help identify likely challenges and mark a complex topography of expected events and an understanding of the nature of lifelong care - it is a map of where you may be and where you are likely to journey.

Strategies must be developed for each milestone and underlying challenges: Who Really Cares, Being Just a Parent is not Enough, Wise Parent Planning, 'FamilyCare' and Peace of Mind. Like other journeys, lifelong care is more likely if parents know where they are going. Decisions can be made, challenges better managed and destinations planned.

Parents, carers and professionals must understand that the challenges for each milestone need to be effectively managed before moving on to the next milestone. Otherwise, unresolved challenges will accumulate and impede progress. The journey towards peace of mind depends on how the previous milestones and challenges have been managed. If personal and family struggles with crisis, acceptance or coping challenges have not been effectively managed, they will continue to be revisited and will erode supported care arrangements.

Parents can manage their circumstances through greater understanding, building knowledge and learning how to better manage... the first step is to understand the journey.
